Blueprint has a seasoned staff with deep experience in both
foundation and nonprofit settings. We also have a number of strategic
partners who offer additional capacity and expertise.
Lucy Bernholz
Lucy Bernholz is the Founder and President of Blueprint
Research & Design, Inc., a strategy consulting firm specializing in
program research and design for philanthropic foundations. She has
worked as a program officer and consultant to foundations since 1990.
Bernholz founded Blueprint Research & Design, Inc in 1997 as a
means of pursuing a lifelong interest in the shifting relationships
between society’s definitions of public and private and to help grant
makers make better use of applied research.
As a community foundation program officer Bernholz was
responsible for developing and managing grant programs in the arts and
humanities, community development, education, environment, health,
historic preservation, and human services. She also supervised the
implementation of special initiatives focused on neighborhood
development, lesbian and gay community issues, management assistance,
citizenship, and early adolescence. As a consultant, Bernholz has
developed grant strategies on a wide range of social issues for
foundations, individuals, and corporations.
Dr. Bernholz is a noted analyst of the philanthropic industry
and has published numerous articles in the trade and general press,
edited collections, and scholarly journals. Her most recent book,
Creating Philanthropic Capital Markets: The Deliberate Evolution, was
published by John Wiley & Sons in 2004. She has been a Visiting
Scholar at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
She serves as a Special Fellow to the Synergos Institute and
as Member of the International Network on Strategic Philanthropy.
Bernholz is on the Advisory Boards of the Philanthropic Initiative for
Racial Equality, YouthGive, Social Venture Partners Bay Area, the
National Philanthropic Trust, and The Grantmaking School. In addition,
she is an Advisory Fellow of the Center on Philanthropy and Public
Policy at the University of Southern California, on the Market Steering
Committee of Impact Manager, and serves on the Board of Directors of
CompuMentor. She earned her B.A. from Yale University where she
captained the lacrosse team and played field hockey. She holds a M.A.
and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Leslie Andrews
Leslie Andrews, Research Associate, supports Blueprint's work
through primary and secondary research, data analysis, and writing for
client projects. Most recently, she worked at a nonprofit residential
facility for emotionally impaired teenagers. She has been involved in a
variety of issues including community activism, violence prevention,
labor relations and racial/ethnic diversity. Leslie holds a B.A. in
sociology and philosophy from the University of Michigan.
Jack Chin
Jack Chin serves as Senior Associate and
leads
Blueprint’s program strategy and design practice. Since joining
Blueprint in late 2001, Jack has managed projects for numerous
foundation clients including: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in
Philanthropy (AAPIP): the Barr, San Francisco, Sisters of Charity and
Packard Foundations; the Roots of Change Fund; and the Stewardship
Council. Jack has worked as a program officer and consultant to
philanthropic institutions since 1991. Prior to joining Blueprint
in
2001, he had served as Co-Director of the Funders’ Forum on Environment
and Education; Program Officer at the GAP Foundation; and Program
Fellow for the Environment at The San Francisco Foundation. Jack
has
also served on the Management Committee of the Environmental
Grantmakers Association. He has an extensive background in the
nonprofit sector, having been a board member, consultant, and staff
member for a number of local and national nonprofit organizations and
foundations. Jack holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Stanford
University.
Stephanie Fuerstner Gillis
Stephanie Fuerstner Gillis serves as Blueprint's Chief
Operating Officer. Prior to her current role as COO, Stephanie worked
at Blueprint as an Analyst, Senior Analyst and Vice President. She has
an extensive background in program strategy, program design, and
evaluation, and substantive expertise in the areas of youth
development, arts education, family foundations, and philanthropy,
among other issues. She arrived at Blueprint with nearly ten years of
non-profit and management experience, having served as the Associate
Director for Development & Evaluation at the Youth Leadership
Institute (a Bay Area youth development organization), and having
worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Center for Youth
Development and Policy Research, and the Institute for Defense and
Disarmament Studies. She has served on the Boards of a number or
organizations, including College Kids and Food Runners. Ms. Gillis has
a Master of Public Policy degree from the Kennedy School of Government
at Harvard University, with a focus on youth development policy, and a
B.A. in political science /international relations from the University
of California, Santa Barbara.
Tina Joh
Tina Joh, Analyst, has worked in the philanthropic industry
for ten years. As a consultant and staff member, she has worked for
affinity groups, regional associations of grantmakers, foundations and
nonprofits. She brings a background in community activism, women’s
issues and social justice philanthropy. Before coming to Blueprint she
worked as the director of research for the Minnesota Council on
Foundations, where she analyzed regional foundation and corporate
giving, created common grant and reporting forms, and implemented a
grantmakers’ diversity study. She has also worked for community
development and affordable housing nonprofits. Tina has extensive
experience with various qualitative research methods and has conducted
research and analysis for projects such as corporate funding for the
arts, how foundations measure their community impact, and cultural
competency in program evaluation. Tina has an M.A. in public affairs
from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota,
and a B.A. from Indiana University.
Lori Jones
Lori Jones is Blueprint’s Business Manager. She is responsible
for various operations and infrastructure matters, as well as special
projects. She brings practical skills and interdisciplinary
perspectives from her experience as a nonprofit administrator, a
program staff member for a private family foundation, a number of years
in professional services (legal and financial consulting) firms, and
service on the management committees of several nonprofit boards. She
holds a B.A. degree in Integral Studies from the California Institute
of Integral Studies in San Francisco.
Justin Louie
Justin Louie, Senior Analyst, leads Blueprint's practice in
evaluation of advocacy, policy change, and social change efforts. He
has a background in foundation and nonprofit program design and
evaluation, as well as grassroots organizing and leadership
development. While at Blueprint, Justin has managed research and
evaluation projects for the Tides Foundation, The California Endowment
and Media Justice Fund, among others. Before Blueprint, he served
as a nonprofit program manager and as president of a national nonprofit
board of directors. Most recently before joining Blueprint, he
worked at Policy Analysis for California Education conducting an
evaluation of childcare workforce development programs. He has
experience in a broad range of issue areas, including youth leadership,
education policy, HIV prevention, nonprofit organizational development
and lesbian/gay rights. Justin holds a B.A. in sociology from the University of California,
Berkeley and a Master in Public
Policy degree from Berkeley’s
Goldman School of Public Policy.
Anna Saltzman
Anna Saltzman recently joined
Blueprint
as an Analyst. She has a background in social policy evaluation,
research methods, and qualitative and quantitative data collection and
analysis. Before coming to Blueprint, she worked as a Research
Analyst
at Mathematica Policy Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While
at
Mathematica, she helped to evaluate a range of government and
foundation-funded public health, health care, and advocacy
initiatives. Ms. Saltzman also has extensive experience helping
organizations to build their capacity for evaluation through the
development of logic models, performance measures, and grantee tracking
systems. Ms. Saltzman has an M.S. from the Harvard School of
Public
Health and a B.A. in psychology from Emory University.
Tony Wang
Tony Wang, Research Associate, recently joined Blueprint’s staff after
serving as a research assistant at the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation where he supported Paul Brest and Hal Harvey in the writing
of their new book, Money Well Spent: A Strategic Guide to Smart
Philanthropy. His
undergraduate work includes research on the link between philanthropy
and inequality, and teaching assistance in two courses on social
entrepreneurship. Tony has a B.A. in Philosophy and a minor in
Economics from Stanford University and graduated with honors from the
Ethics in Society Program.
